The address on this glass negative, 1447 Massachusetts Avenue, places the view on one of Washington's long diagonal avenues, which in the early twentieth century were lined with residences, offices and shops. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented the city's buildings and streets around 1920, made the image. Its date is inferred from neighboring negatives in the same range rather than from a firm record. Look for the streaks and blemishes across the glass, which come from deterioration in the original coatings and give the picture a mottled, aged texture.
