A working newspaper's name is painted into the scene, which sets this view apart from the other street photographs on the board: the Times, at 116 North Carolina Avenue Southeast. The National Photo Company, a commercial firm that documented Washington's streets and buildings in the early twentieth century, made the glass negative sometime between 1920 and 1921. Herbert A. French gave it to the Library of Congress in 1947. Look for the faint streaks across the plate, which come from the natural breakdown of the original coating rather than from the scene itself.
