Interior views of Washington car dealerships from this period are less common than street scenes, which makes this glass negative of the Trew Motor Co. interior worth a closer look. The National Photo Company, which photographed the capital's streets and businesses from about 1907 into the 1930s, worked mainly with large glass plates like this 8 by 6 inch example. Dated to around 1920, when automobiles were rapidly replacing horse-drawn transport in American cities, the image records a shift in local commerce. Streaks and blemishes from the natural breakdown of the original coating are visible across the plate.
