The title names a "Dist. Nat. Branch" in Washington, D.C., but the abbreviation is not explained, so the record gives little beyond the room itself. The image is a glass negative from the National Photo Company, which documented the capital's buildings and businesses in the early twentieth century for postcards, publicity, and civic records. Its date, roughly 1920, is inferred from similar negatives rather than from the scene. Streaks and blemishes on the glass come from the natural breakdown of the original coating, but they still offer a view of an everyday commercial interior of that period.
