Workers are shown readying the great hall of the Pension Office for the inaugural ball held there in March 1909, a celebration of William Howard Taft's incoming presidency. The Pension Building, completed in the 1880s, was known for its enormous central hall with tall columns, and it became a favored venue for large public events in the capital. The negative comes from the Bain News Service, a commercial photo agency whose pictures of Washington life were widely sold to newspapers. The title is taken from the agency's own caption data, which has not been independently verified.
