This glass negative shows a Pierce-Arrow automobile, a six-cylinder car rated at 48 horsepower, photographed in Washington, D.C. The record dates it to March 20, 1909, about two weeks after William Howard Taft's inauguration on March 4, so the picture captures the very start of his presidency. Pierce-Arrow, a Buffalo, New York maker of expensive touring cars, was a marque favored by well-off buyers of the period. The title comes from notes the Bain News Service wrote on its negatives and caption cards, so the attribution to Taft is worth checking against other sources.
