Its title pins the scene to a single day, March 5, 1889, the day after Benjamin Harrison took the oath as the 23rd president. Callers were received at the White House during the early days of a new administration, and the line of people waiting to shake the president's hand shows how the building was open to ordinary citizens. The card was made by Kilburn Brothers of Littleton, New Hampshire, a firm that sold stereographs of cities and public events to a national audience. Viewed through a stereoscope, the two nearly identical images merged into a single three-dimensional scene.
