Few inauguration pictures from 1929 stretch as wide as this one, a panoramic gelatin silver print more than three feet long that captures the crowd at Herbert Hoover's swearing-in on March 4, 1929. Portraits of Hoover and Vice President Charles Curtis, made by the Washington studio Harris & Ewing, flank the panorama at either end, while the panorama itself came from DeSouza Bros. of Pennsylvania Avenue. Hoover, who had served as Secretary of Commerce, won the 1928 election and succeeded Calvin Coolidge, and the print's long format lets viewers study the spectators and the Capitol setting around the ceremony.
