Ford's theater on Tenth Street in Washington is the setting here, on the night of April 14, 1865, when John Wilkes Booth shot President Abraham Lincoln during a performance. The New York firm Currier & Ives, which sold inexpensive lithographs of current events to a broad public, issued this print in 1865, within months of the killing. Lincoln died the next morning, and prints like this one helped Americans grieve and try to make sense of the assassination. The firm's catalog raisonné lists it, which makes it a useful record of how the event was presented to the public.
