A man in a suit stands beside a Cadillac with the Lincoln Memorial rising behind him, a pairing that captures the way automobiles and monumental architecture coexisted in Washington in the early 1930s. The Lincoln Memorial had been dedicated in 1922, and by 1931 it was already a popular stop for visitors touring the capital by car. Underwood & Underwood, a firm best known for stereoscopic views and news photography, produced many images like this one, which were often sold to publishers and to the public as souvenirs of the city.
