The Lincoln Memorial, with its seated marble figure of Abraham Lincoln behind a colonnade of 36 Doric columns, was dedicated in 1922 and has since become one of the most recognizable sites in the nation's capital. This photograph dates to about 1944, a wartime year when the monument drew steady crowds of visitors and was a common stop for servicemen on leave in Washington. The memorial's position at the western end of the National Mall, facing the Reflecting Pool and the Washington Monument, gives the view a sense of the city's planned axis. The record notes it was registered with the U.S. Copyright Office and was not renewed, a detail that reflects how many mid-century prints entered the public domain.
