Marian Anderson sings on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in this view, taken during a memorial service for Harold L. Ickes, the Interior Secretary who died in 1952. The camera looks from the Lincoln statue across the grounds toward the Washington Monument. Ickes had arranged Anderson's 1939 Easter concert at the memorial, held after the Daughters of the American Revolution refused her use of Constitution Hall. The steps, and the view of the monuments, connected that earlier concert with his memorial.
