The Emancipation Monument in Lincoln Park was designed by the sculptor Thomas Ball and unveiled in 1876, so this 1870 stereograph captures the work while it was still in progress, before the statue existed in its final form. Stereo cards like this one were sold by publishers such as J.F. Jarvis, who issued views of the capital's public spaces for home parlor viewers. The monument was funded largely by formerly enslaved people and the image records an early moment in the effort to commemorate emancipation in the nation's capital.
