The Lincoln Memorial fills the right foreground of this aerial view, with the Washington Monument rising at the center and the Capitol far off at the end of the Mall. The picture dates from the years when the memorial was new, and it shows the Mall as a long corridor of lawns and reflecting pools. It came from the Photo Section at Bolling Field, the Army air station across the Anacostia River, where military photographers documented the capital from above between the wars. The straight axis running from the Capitol to the Lincoln Memorial reflects the city plan that was revived in the early 1900s, and it is easy to trace from the air.
