The Washington Monument is the anchor here, rising white and slender from the center of the frame, but the detail that sets this view apart is the row of temporary wartime buildings spreading out in the distance. Washington filled up quickly during World War II as the federal government expanded, and the Navy erected a large number of hastily built structures on open ground near the Mall to house clerks and staff. The aerial angle shows how the monument stood among these new office blocks, a reminder of how the wartime capital's footprint grew around its older landmarks.
