Taken from the air and looking southwest, this view shows the Department of Agriculture complex in the heart of the capital, set among the federal buildings that lined the city's central axis in the 1930s. The photograph came from the Photo Section at Bolling Field, the Army air base across the Anacostia River, where military photographers made aerial documentation of Washington during those years. Such images were valued for showing how the government's expanding building program reshaped the city's core, and today they offer a clear record of its street grid and monumental layout before later postwar changes.
