Taken on August 6, 1892, this aerial view shows the Jefferson Building while its exterior was still under construction, with scaffolding and stonework marking the work in progress. The building was meant to give the Library of Congress a home of its own after decades of sharing space in the U.S. Capitol. Its architects, John L. Smithmeyer and Paul J. Pelz, drew on the French Beaux-Arts tradition for its ornate design. The elevated vantage point also shows the scale of the site and the dense city blocks around it, a perspective that was still unusual for photographers of the period.
