Looking down from the northwest, this color print shows the Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress just as it was settling into its place on Capitol Hill, above East Capitol Street. The library opened in 1897 after years of construction, and its ornate Italian Renaissance façade and domes quickly became some of the most admired additions to the city's skyline. The photochrom process, a Swiss method that printed color from several stones, was popular for souvenir views of this kind, so the print also records how the building was presented to visitors in its first years.
