Howard University's main building, shown here in an exterior view from around 1900, stands as one of the earliest visual records of the school's campus in its formative years. The caption card notes that the photograph was reportedly displayed in the American Negro exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1900, a showcase organized by W. E. B. Du Bois and others to present African American life, education, and achievement to an international audience. Founded in 1867 in Washington, D.C., Howard was among the institutions created to educate Black Americans after the Civil War, so images like this one carried particular weight in that setting.
