Students at Howard University, the historically Black institution founded in Washington, D.C., in 1867, are shown at work in a bacteriology laboratory in this view. Laboratory science of this kind was still fairly new around 1900, following the work of Pasteur and Koch in the 1880s, so a class in it at a Black university was a notable example of current scientific training. The caption card notes that the photograph was reportedly shown in the American Negro exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1900, a display intended to show Black education and achievement to an international audience.
