Georgetown University's campus on the bluffs above the Potomac is the detail that sets this view apart from the many other Washington scenes on the board, since it shows the school's grounds from overhead rather than from street level. Georgetown was founded in 1789 as the first Catholic college in the United States, and by the early twentieth century its red-brick buildings and open lawns stood out clearly against the surrounding neighborhood of older houses. Aerial photography was still relatively new around 1920, so views like this one record how the campus and its riverside setting looked at a moment when the city's growth was just beginning to reshape the district.
