A sewing class at Howard University, the historically Black institution founded in Washington, D.C., in 1867, is the subject here, and the caption card links the photograph to the American Negro exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1900. That exhibit, organized largely under the direction of W.E.B. Du Bois, used photographs and statistics to counter stereotypes and to document the education and progress of Black Americans. Domestic and vocational training such as sewing was a common part of schooling for Black students at the time, so the scene reflects both the curriculum and the image the organizers wanted to present abroad. The date is recorded only as circa 1900.
