At the southwest corner of 14th Street and New York Avenue in April 1900, this view shows one of the busiest junctions in downtown Washington. The record links it to a numbered series of Washington street views, so it likely belongs to a systematic survey of the city's streets around the turn of the century. In those years 14th Street NW was a commercial spine lined with shops, offices and theaters, and streetcars moved through the crossing. The picture offers a useful snapshot of how the city's commercial core looked just before the automobile began to change its streets.
