The corner of Pennsylvania Avenue and 19th Street NW, shown here as a row of buildings called the Seven Buildings, sat a few blocks from the White House on the city's main ceremonial and commercial thoroughfare. In the late nineteenth century, Pennsylvania Avenue was lined with shops, offices, hotels, and government-related businesses, and a block like this one shows how closely commerce and public life were intertwined in the capital. The record dates the print to about 1880, though that date comes from an unverified caption card, so it is best read as approximate. The photograph comes from James M. Goode's collection of Washington views, which is useful for seeing how the city's streetscapes were documented during this period.
