Pennsylvania Avenue's 600 block in northwest Washington is the stretch this picture shows, with its row of buildings lining the street. The National Photo Company, which made thousands of street views of the capital in the early decades of the 1900s, took many such scenes for sale as postcards and souvenirs. The record ties the picture to hotels and stores, a reminder that this stretch between the Capitol and the White House was a busy commercial strip around 1922. Much of this older streetscape was cleared in the 1930s to make way for the Federal Triangle complex, so the photograph now documents a block that no longer exists.
