A storefront-lined stretch of Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest in downtown Washington, the 600 block is the subject here, and the record gives its date as 1918 with a question mark, while a pencil note on the print suggests the photograph was taken after 1926. The image belongs to the National Photo Company Collection, whose staff documented the city's streets and commercial life for decades. Downtown blocks like this one were later cleared for the Federal Triangle building program in the 1930s, so the photograph preserves a streetscape that no longer exists. Look closely at the signs and shopfronts for clues to the businesses and the era.
