This National Photo Company view shows People's Drug Store No. 1 at the corner of 7th Street and Massachusetts Avenue NW in Washington, D.C. The "No. 1" in the name points to a store that was the first of a local chain, which was a common way for drugstores of the period to build a neighborhood presence. The image dates to about 1922, when Prohibition shaped the trade: many drugstores relied on soda fountains and lunch counters, and the storefront was often the most visible sign of the business. The National Photo Company documented Washington's streets and businesses extensively in these years, so the picture also serves as a record of the city's commercial streetscape.
