Vermont Avenue Baptist Church, pictured here in Washington, D.C., belonged to the city's large network of Black Baptist congregations around 1899. The caption card notes that the photograph was shown in the American Negro exhibit at the Paris Exposition of 1900, a display organized largely by W.E.B. Du Bois to present the lives and achievements of Black Americans to an international audience. Churches like this one were central to Black neighborhoods, serving as places of worship, schooling, mutual aid and civic organizing. The title's wording reflects the language of its era and is worth noting as a record of how the subject was labeled then.
