Maryland Avenue was one of the diagonal avenues in Pierre L'Enfant's 1791 plan for the capital, cutting across the rectangular street grid toward the Capitol. Where it meets Second Street Northeast, the avenue runs through the blocks just east of the Capitol, a area of modest houses, small businesses, and the railroad lines that were reshaping the district at the turn of the century. The record dates the print to about 1900 to 1905, based on an older caption card whose details have not been independently checked. Street scenes from this period help show how the city's wide planned avenues looked before the later rebuilding of the Mall and the Union Station area.
