A Peoples Drug Store interior, photographed in Washington around 1922, shows one of the neighborhood pharmacies that lined the city's commercial streets. In those years a drugstore was often a social stop as much as a place for prescriptions, with a soda fountain and sundries counter drawing shoppers in from the sidewalk. The National Photo Company, which documented Washington from about 1907 into the early 1930s, recorded such ordinary businesses alongside monuments and government buildings. Views like this one preserve fixtures, lighting and merchandising that later renovations would erase.
