The people in this group portrait stand shoulder to shoulder in front of a People's Drug Store in Washington, D.C., a chain whose name in the subject heading ties the picture to a specific business rather than to the street in general. The photograph was made by the National Photo Company, a commercial studio that documented the capital's streets, buildings and people in the first decades of the twentieth century, and it dates from sometime between 1909 and 1932. Drugstores of this era were neighborhood fixtures where clerks filled prescriptions, sold sundries and soda, and often knew their customers by name. A staff photograph like this one preserves how such a shop presented itself to the public and who ran it day to day.
