The lit storefront of the Peoples Drug Store at 8th and H Streets NE stands out because it was photographed after dark, when the shop windows and signs were the main light on the street. Long exposures on large glass plates, as used here, were needed to record such scenes, and the result captures a neighborhood commercial corridor in Northeast Washington around 1919 or 1920. The National Photo Company made thousands of views of the city in these years, documenting its streets, businesses and buildings for commercial sale. Visible streaks and blemishes on the plate come from age and the deterioration of its original coating.
