Peoples Drug Store at 804 Eighth Street Northeast is captured here on an 8 by 6 inch glass negative, a format the National Photo Company used widely to document Washington's commercial streets in the early 1920s. The company's photographers recorded storefronts, signs, and street life across the city, so the image offers a snapshot of everyday retail that might otherwise go unrecorded. The negative came to the Library of Congress as a 1947 gift from Herbert A. French. Viewers may notice streaks and blemishes, which come from the natural deterioration of the original emulsion coatings on glass plates of this age.
