Tucked into the northwest corner of the main waiting room, this Bureau of Information was where travelers could ask about train times, connections and fares before boarding. Union Station opened in 1907 as a grand Beaux-Arts gateway designed by Daniel Burnham, and its waiting room, with soaring vaulted ceilings and marble floors, was built to impress as much as to shelter crowds. The photograph's date is uncertain, but it likely comes from the years just after the station opened, when rail travel was at its height. The scene shows how the building was meant to guide and reassure the many people who passed through it each day.
