The main front of Union Station, shown here, faces Massachusetts Avenue and was the public face of a building that opened in Washington in 1907. Daniel H. Burnham's firm designed the station in the Beaux-Arts style, with a monumental colonnade and classical proportions meant to make a rail terminal feel like a civic landmark. This halftone was reproduced in *The Inland Architect and News Record* in August 1908, when such printed plates let architects and readers study new buildings in fine detail. The magazine's coverage shows how closely the profession followed Washington's rebuilding under the City Beautiful movement.
