A tobacco shop set inside the men's waiting room gives this view of Union Station its particular character. The station opened in 1907 as a grand Beaux-Arts terminal designed by Daniel Burnham, and its separate waiting rooms reflected the customs of rail travel at the time, when a sheltered room with a stand for cigars and newspapers was a common amenity. The caption card credits the maker as Tenschert of Washington, D.C., but records no date, so the picture is best placed in the early decades of the station's life.
