A souvenir shop inside Union Station is the subject here, a small retail corner within a building made for travelers passing through the capital. Daniel Burnham's Beaux-Arts terminal opened in 1907 and was a busy rail hub by the 1920s and 1930s, when shops like this one sold keepsakes to visitors heading home or just arriving in Washington. The photograph was made by Tenschert, a photographer working in the city during these years. The pairing of everyday commerce with the station's monumental architecture is what makes the scene worth a closer look.
