Rather than the great main concourse, this view looks down a passageway lined with arched openings in Union Station, the Beaux-Arts rail terminal that opened in 1907 on Massachusetts Avenue. Daniel Burnham's firm designed the building in granite and marble, with vaulted spaces meant to impress arriving travelers. The National Photo Company, which produced a large body of views of the capital in the early twentieth century, made this print sometime between 1909 and 1932, when the station was a busy gateway to the city.
