Seen from above and through a window, this view looks down on Union Station in Washington, D.C., where the curved fanlight shapes catch the eye. The station opened in 1907 as the capital's main rail gateway, designed by Daniel Burnham in the Beaux-Arts style and built by the Pennsylvania Railroad. Fanlights, the semicircular windows set over doors and entries, were a common feature of the period's public buildings. The picture's exact date is uncertain, somewhere between 1910 and 1940, but the steep vantage point turns an ordinary architectural detail into a pattern of arches and light.
