Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad and opened in 1907, this view shows the front of Washington's Union Station, the grand Beaux-Arts terminal designed by Daniel Burnham's firm to serve the capital's rail traffic. Its monumental granite facade and colonnaded entrance were meant to make the building a civic landmark as much as a transportation hub. The negative is an 8 x 10 inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that documented American towns, railroads and scenery in the years before and after 1900, so the picture captures the station in its early life.
