Union Station, the Beaux-Arts rail terminal that had opened in 1907, provides the setting for this 1912 Columbus Day memorial observance. Such commemorations reflected the efforts of Italian American and other communities to win public recognition for the explorer, years before Columbus Day became a federal holiday in 1934. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of news pictures from the Bain News Service that recorded public life in the capital during these years. The title was supplied by a cataloger rather than the photographer, so the exact details of the occasion are best read cautiously.
