Daniel Burnham's New Union Station in Washington is the subject here, captured while its construction was still underway. Burnham's Beaux-Arts design brought the trains of several railroads under one roof and replaced a scattering of older depots that had served the capital for decades. The Detroit Publishing Company, which documented American cities and railroads in large-format glass negatives around 1900, made this view, and its construction subject reflects the building activity that accompanied the project.
