Taken on the Fourth of July in 1949, this view centers on the Bond Building at the corner of 14th Street and New York Avenue Northwest, a downtown intersection where office blocks and shops lined the diagonal avenue that cuts across the city grid. Joseph S. Allen made the print as part of a group of photographs of Washington's commercial and office buildings, a record of the city's architecture in the years after World War II. The holiday date is worth noticing, since it was a day when the downtown would have looked different from its usual workday bustle.
