Few images from the 1900 Paris Exposition show an institution as directly as this view of the law library at Howard University in Washington, D.C. Founded in 1867 and named for General Oliver Otis Howard, the university trained many Black lawyers, teachers, and physicians in the decades after emancipation. According to the caption card, the photograph was shown in the American Negro exhibit in Paris, which W.E.B. Du Bois helped organize to present the progress of Black Americans through photographs, charts, and statistics. The library's shelves and reading space reflect the emphasis on education that ran through that display.
