Sculptor Roland Hinton Perry's Neptune Fountain stands on the grounds of the Library of Congress, and this view looks toward its west front, where the monumental Jefferson Building had opened only a few years earlier. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many color prints of American landmarks around 1898, recorded the scene with the photochrom process, which gave the stone and water a soft, painterly look. The card attached to the print is old and not fully verified, but the picture still shows how the new Washington cityscape was presented to tourists and the public at the turn of the century.
