This drawing is a site plan of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., showing how the building and its grounds sit on the city's Capitol Hill. Site plans like this one record a building's footprint, its position relative to streets and neighboring structures, and the layout of the surrounding land, which made them essential to planning and construction. The Library's collections had outgrown the Capitol by the late 1800s, and the institution's move to its own building across from the Capitol, the Thomas Jefferson Building, marked a major change in its history. The drawing is a lithograph, a printing method that let architects reproduce plans for presentation and publication.
