Men tend machines in the Card Division printing office inside the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building, a setting that shows how the library's cataloging work was turned into physical products. The Card Division began supplying printed catalog cards to other libraries in 1901, so that each library did not have to type or write its own. Photographs like this one, taken between 1900 and 1920, document the building's working interior in the early years after it opened in 1897, when the library was expanding its role well beyond a reading room for Congress.
