The Main Reading Room of the Library of Congress, shown here, is the great domed hall at the center of the Thomas Jefferson Building, which opened to the public in 1897. This glass-plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, a commercial firm known for its photographs of American cities, landscapes and interiors around 1900 to 1910. The room's rotunda and its ring of reading desks, lit from the dome and its tall windows, were meant to show the nation's book collection as a civic monument. The camera captures the scale of the space, which the building's architects designed to feel like a temple of learning.
