Taken for the Detroit Publishing Company, this view shows a long passageway inside the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., a building that opened in 1897 and was known for its ornate Beaux-Arts interiors. The photographer used an 8 by 10 inch glass dry plate, a large format that captured fine detail in the marble, columns and receding corridor. Detroit Publishing photographers traveled widely across the United States in the early 1900s, documenting cities, landmarks and scenery for commercial sale. The negative was given to the Library of Congress in 1949 by the State Historical Society of Colorado, which helps explain how such a fragile record survived.
