The subject here is the Sea Nymphs fountain, set among the sculpture and fixtures of the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building, which the Library moved into in 1897, only a few years before this view was taken. The stereo card format, with two nearly identical exposures meant to be seen together through a stereoscope, was a popular way for Americans around 1900 to tour new civic buildings from the parlor. Publishers such as the War Photograph and Exhibition Company produced many such cards of Washington landmarks. The building's lavish decoration, including its fountains and statuary, was meant to show the nation's ambitions for its library, and this card captures that intent in a form many households would have owned.
